You're obviously not a hard-rock fan Chris.

Which I understand. Music is music. Iron Maiden is more than music though, their an icon, a legend, one of the real leaders in heavy metal. No other band there (maybe except Metallica) can say they have even nearly accomplished the extent of international success Iron Maiden has earned (in Bonnarro).

And it shows, in the audience.

I haven't been tons of concerts, but the energy put off by the audience was ground-breaking, unlike any other band I've ever seen that was able to do. When they came on, when they played, hell, when they started and ended each song - the ground shook, everyone threw the horns in the air, and I highly doubt anyone left able to even speak clearly because of the mass yelling that went on. Maiden was delayed for an 2hrs - but even if they were delayed for 5, the notion in the air was that no one would have really cared. Bruce Dickinson would make it all up later.

If you want to say that yeah.. Bonnarro is a way better concert because of the variety of music, acts, and amount of people - sure. However, I would have never traded my Maiden ticket for an all 4-day pass to Bonnarro, and I'm pretty sure neither of have anyone else at the Maiden concert. They're fucking legends, and it was a legendary show.

True. Though I appreciate it...and what it has done for the music industry.

The Godfather of Soul...

nein.

Sure, in the U.S., not no where near the INTERNATIONAL fame as Iron Maiden has (well.. Robert Plant or even the Police are exceptions too).

Outside of the U.S., Maiden's record of sold albums crushes those artists, and popularity there is unquestionably amazing. Especially in Latin American countries (Brazil bring most notable) go CRAZY over them. Even INDIA ffs. They'll know who Steve Harris is, but will be clueless who Eddie Vedder or James Hetfield is.

I'm not saying those bands suck (James Brown!!!), but the legacy of Iron Maiden is seriously, seriously astronomical and strong.

....and they earn every ounce of it.

I'll just have to disagree again. I don't believe we'll be able to do anything more than sit in a stalemate though. I look at things other than record sales, I look at over all fan base and touring as well as record sales.

The dead toured for over 50 yrs. and put out quite a few records. But that paled in comparison to the amount of shows they played. They were the highest grossing touring band of all time up until a few years ago.

And if they had made what the bands today were making per show.(what...50-60 bucks a show?) for the last 50 years. Their legacy would never be touched.

I once again am not trying to understate their contributions to heavy metal, but i just think you fail to see the contributions to music over all that each of these bands have made. Yes, some of them may not be as big to you. But each of these bands listed are MASSIVE touring bands...or have been pushing the evolution of music since the 50's and 60's. Their contributions to music can not be pushed to the wayside because some kids in India wouldn't recognize Bob Dylan.

That would be the equivalent of saying...well yes, Chuck Berry was not an international power house. Agreed.

But none of the bands you listen to would be playing the way they are if he hadn't pushed rock music in the direction that he pushed it in.

Many of the bands that play today wouldn't be touring the way they are if it had not been for the Grateful Dead.

In closing, there is no way that you can dispute that Neil Young, Bob Dylan, The Dead, The Allman Brothers Band, BB King, Willie Nelson, and Elvis Costello all shaped the way music is played, produced, and presented.

You argue that these certain artists are much more influential on the basis that they either influenced hardcore touring (Grateful Dead), or shaped a genre entirely (Metal and Rock was founded on the basis of Blues).

Which to an extent is true, but not entirely.

Grateful Dead did a hell of a lot of touring, that I will not argue. I do disagree with that bands wouldn't tour as much if it weren't for them, because they were not the only bands to tour heavily.

Deep Purple is probably the biggest example. A heavy influence of Maiden, they have toured on every continent since 1969. They are considered one of the most hardcore touring bands of all time in the world.

Quote from Wikipedia:

In 2007 they received special award for selling more than 150,000 tickets in France with 40 dates in the country in 2007 alone. {that's only ONE year, which is over 40 years since their start.}

They're as important to rock and metal as Chuck Berry is to the genre, if not more - they have a DIRECT impact on it as a whole.

And then you have Maiden...

Iron Maiden, who has fans literally all over the world - with record sales to prove it - and who have toured for over 30 years. If you want to see the many, many places they've toured, the amount of times they've been there, and what years - go here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Maiden_Tour_History

Quote:
Iron Maiden were ranked #24 in VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock", and in Kerrang! magazine were ranked as the most important band of the last 25 years. The band were ranked fourth on MTV's "Top 10 Greatest Heavy Metal Bands of All Time". Iron Maiden were named the third best metal band of all time on VH1 Classic: Top 20 Metal Bands. The band also won the Ivor Novello Award for international achievement in 2002. The band was also inducted into the Hollywood RockWalk during their tour in the United States in 2005.

Those achievements are based off of world-wide support to a legendary band. What's probably most awesome about Maiden, is throughout their entire success, very little is because of the media - both television and radio support.

They're international legends. Of course they're influenced by other bands, but none of whom {which continues my argument} have the world-wide success, support, respect, devotion, popularity, love, and achievements that Iron Maiden has. They're impact is HUGE to bands. Not just metal bands, but a lot of rock and even pop-rock bands. Their style and methods of playing is unique, and has provided a basis of all new bands to start off from.

True... but neither can you forget Iron Maiden. Maybe a different genre, they have still influenced and impacted MUCH of what modern music is today.

WIKI wrote:
The Grateful Dead are well-known for constantly touring throughout their long career. They promoted a sense of community among their fans, who became known as Deadheads, many of whom followed their tours for months or years on end. In their early career, the band also dedicated their time and talents to their community, the Haight-Ashbury area of San Francisco, making available free food, lodging, music and health care to all comers; they were the "first among equals in giving unselfishly of themselves to hippie culture, performing 'more free concerts than any band in the history of music'.

Throughout their 30 years, the Grateful Dead spent their career at the edge of the "official music industry" creating a business model that was antithetical to the model of creating a polished album and then touring to support its sales. The model they evolved was based primarily on touring. Their tours included playing multi-night runs at large arenas and stadiums from year to year. Their shows, usually longer than two hours, rarely featured the same song twice in succeeding nights and never played the songs in exactly the same way. These unique qualities made the Grateful Dead the most viewed rock band during their 30 year run. It spawned a faithful following of Deadheads that came from all parts of society, many of which went on to become influential artists themselves. They condoned the live taping of their shows which virally spread their music and added to the number of Deadheads. They proved that a touring rock band could be successful and self-sustaining outside of the standard music industry business model.

The Summer Jam at Watkins Glen was a 1973 rock festival which once received the Guinness Book of World Records entry for "Largest audience at a pop festival." An estimated 600,000 rock fans came to the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Raceway outside of Watkins Glen, New York on July 28, 1973, to see The Allman Brothers Band, The Band, and the Grateful Dead perform. It was the largest musical concert up to that time, with an audience of over 600,000.

Many historians claimed that the Watkins Glen event was the largest gathering of people in the history of the United States. In essence, that meant that on July 28, one out of every 350 people living in America at the time was listening to the sounds of rock at the New York state racetrack. Considering that most of those who attended the event hailed from the Northeast, and that the average age of those present was approximately seventeen to twenty-four, close to one out of every three young people from Boston to New York was at the festival

I think we're comparing apples to oranges here.
