i thought that the xbox 360 could be used as the media center. why not use it?

All I know is that the computer I plan to build now will probably either end up in my room, or be put under the t.v. in the living room, then just get a cable and plug her in to it.. Mmm. Store movies and what not, games.. CZ on TV.. PRobably get a cable splitter, or a wireless adapter, seeing as how the router's on the other side of the wall practically.

*EDIT*

Alright, so I can either go with the dual-core build, which comes to a total of $1288.33, or if I wait for quad, which I probably will, I'll assume I can add on about 100-200 bucks to that total.

Anyone know the time frame of when the quad's comin' out?.. That determines what I'm getting really.. If it comes out next month or something, I'll have another 400 bucks and I'll be good.

And, what operating system would you guys recommend, along microsoft's line that is.

XP pro (64-bit if you can), obviously; there's no point in investing in Vista, espiaclly when SP3 is around the corner :)

And yeah Chris, I don't know if it can or not, hopefully does. I just looked into it not too long ago and found out all the shit it can do (ie. stream movies from your PC to your TV;great if your PC's right next to your main HDTV).

Cz or any other games blows on your tv. Probably because I could never get as comportable with the set-up as I could with a monitor. ov-er ra-ted

Wow building a computer really is not all that pricey Im gonna def do this by the end of the year.

Peng, Quads are slated to come out Feb or March.

By then, it should be the exact same price, or cheaper....

I am going to be running vista 32, because I need to learn it for work. Win xp 64 worked fine for me, no problems at all, but vista 64 is just too unsupported right now. But for your average user I would suggest xp 32 bit, it will run the best (most stable), but xp 64 may load things faster :wink:
