We will learn alot about the composition of the moon's topsoil inside the crater they are going to 'smack' a rocket into...They're not going to actually bomb it.

This is the typical way they find out the composition of objects in space. Fire a slug at it, at a given speed. Whats throw into the air can be read by telescopes, and what ever is vaporised often times leaves chemical signatures behind.

I dont believe its been done before, but I've read about it in a few Aurthur Clarke books. Some that were written before man had even walked on the moon.

There are people out there seriously demanding for us to not do this. This impact is hundreds of times smaller than the impacts that have cratered the surface of the moon. The reason we are doing this though, is to aim for a polar region (most likely to have water), and to have all our observation equipment aimed and ready.

Some of the comments were quite funny. It really should be, "impact" not "bomb." There is no explosion. If you drop a rock from your roof, did you just bomb your yard?

Just be sure to have your telescope, 10 to 12 inches or lager, out that night.

Already marked my calendar for this. There would be two impacts. The first one by the rocket and the second one by the instrument measuring the first ones impact. Awesome stuff.

Actually Cole. The impact inside a large crater and this impact will not even come close to the size of an actual meteoroid "bump".

What, you don't have a spare 5 grand for a 12 inch? Ha ha.

I think I'm more interested in keeping mine pointed at the house across field.

Funny how those people think that they know more than the people who study and do this for a living.
