Kevin Lannan In His Image (Part One of Three) They came from the site. They were born in his image, as were we before them. Only, they looked nothing like us. Not anymore. The radiation changed them, and soon they changed at will. The world changed with them. At first it was just an ordinary impact. Well, that’s not true. It was a LARGE impact. One of the largest meteorite impacts in the recorded history of man. No one thought anything of it. The usual precautions were used, but they were later to be found futile, inadequate. The radiation was a type never before seen, but by the time scientists from around the world had discovered that fact it was too late. It had happened. The radiation pierced everything. It pierced the hazmat suits, the concrete walls, the building walls, everything. No one was spared, and it traveled much farther than would be expected by the “experts.” The changes took a while to become apparent, but once they started the process was rapid. The changes varied at first, but they all came to the same general conclusion. The mind was altered greatly, to an inhuman spectrum. The spectrum of the mind was the area in which the mind’s thoughts dabbled and delved the most. Although the spectrums in each inhuman were unique, the scale and intensity were always the same. Most spectrums ranged more towards violence, anger, despair(which was projected upon us), and other negative emotions. Some were more unique, and sometimes included sexuality(which ended in violence), joy(projected to a level that became hazardous to the victim), and even courage(which was again projected upon the victim, and was so intense that it caused the subject to become reckless, inevitably leading to their demise.) The other major change was, at first, appearance. The shapes and forms of the once-humans became twisted, demented, contorted. Then they began to control the changes. Their “true” form, the true shape, is considered to be a three dimensional shadow, although technically this is only the most commonly used form. In reality, they had no true form. They could choose whatever they wanted. But that’s what they were considered by most. Shadows. Shadow demons. Monsters from the Night. Of course this is untrue. No being can be a shadow. A shadow is merely an absence of light. No, what these were, these Inhumans, these Shadow-Forms, were minor gods. In essence, they were the next step. Or maybe the step after that one. They had power. They could change at will, but what’s more, they could change reality. They not only delved into a certain spectrum within their own minds, but they also delved into your mind, finding what you feared or desired most. Once they found that, they made it all come true before your eyes just by willing it so. But the scenario you had in mind was not the scenario they played before you. No, these Creatures, these Abominations, the Shadow-Gods were much more cruel. They played a scenario according to their designs, much more intense, graphic, and dreadful than any human mind could cook up. So out they crawled, slithered, flickered, flied, leaped, and ran from the site. The site of impact and exposure. And off to distant lands they traveled, causing death, havoc, and corruption. The world was changed into a chaotic mutation by their power. The people, slaughtered. Sadly, strangely, the animals were mutated in time as well, but only by the gods. The simplest animals were left alone, apparently not worth the attention of the higher-thinking beings. It was in these few untouched animals that survivors found solace, hope. And so now we turn to the current situation. I speak as a witness, as one of the corrupted, with so little time left. I have been turned, doomed to fall into an eternity of insanity placed upon me by the Mind-Benders. My mind is being turned slowly, and my body rips itself from my control constantly. I cling to the last vestiges of my humanity, able to control my new abilities to a small degree. I now bear witness to crimes un-punishable, to atrocities hardly describable, and to changes previously unthought-of. I now make quite possibly the only record of this earth shattering revolution of change. I leave to the stars what is most likely to be the last chapter in the long life of the Homo Sapiens… _____________________________________________________________ -Okay guys, the format got messed up again, and this was the best I could do. This is probably how all of them will read from now on, but I assume it is halfway decent. -Please give me honest, in depth feedback about all of my stories. -This is an introductory piece to the rest of the short story. |
