Yes, please, everyone, do NOT do a upgrade. I bought the upgrade disk, but am doing a "custom" upgrade path (aka fresh install). If you do an upgrade it will be slow as shit.

I used an upgrade disk and it's definitely not slow as shit. Then again this is a new laptop so I might not be able to tell as easily.

I did the upgrade (custom), and when I got into windows, I knew something was wrong, it kept alot of my settings, wallpaper, etc, but all the program files were gone. Then I noticed it seemed slower than before, so I formatted it and did a fresh install, boot times dropped by about 1/3, steam took half the time to open, all around much faster. It made my 3.4ghz quad seem sluggish, if it can do that, then something is wrong.

Also I was worried that if I formatted (using the disk on boot), it would not see it as and upgrade (with a blank drive at this point), but I wiped out the partition, formatted, and everything worked fine.

Is there native drivers for RAID setups or do I still have to tapdance around with a floppy disk? It's kind of been the biggest reason why I haven't upgraded.

Also still a good idea to wait around a year before I upgrade?

No, you don't have to tapdance w/ a floppy. Some natives are available, but if it's not recognized, you can use a CD.

no more FDD fail. :)

Just like vista, windows 7 is now floppy free for the raid drivers. My raid is off my northbridge (ICH9r), I never had to install any drivers to get into windows, once in windows, I went to intel's site and got the most up to date drivers.

In case they don't have your drivers, the installer can read from a USB flash drive now, when you hit browse :)

Well, I upgraded to 7 - 64 bit from XP - 32 bit and a computer wise it is much faster. Start up time and opening and running anything from steam to browsing the internet to aim is running faster. Now my problem is that my L4D2 is crapping out and giving around 50 fps, but before I used to get an average of 100 fps. I don't know the reason... btw my setup is 2.66 Quad Amd Phenom, 4GB of Ram, and 9800 GT

And Cole also about that upgrading thing. I see that it saved everything I had from my previous OS (xp) in a folder called Windows.Old. Does that mean I did it the correct or incorrect way?

it should be correct, go look in the folder and see if you have stuff in there that was on your computer before
