I've been looking into trying to get a bike for a while now, something that I can get some exercise on and ride but at the same time, I want to be able to use it to commute to and from college. I'm not looking to spend a whole lot which I know really narrows it down, and I've looked into it a bit, but I'm still not sure what kind of bike to buy.

Does anyone in the clan happen to use one alot and have any first time buyer tips for me?I'm a broke college student at the moment and can't afford a whole lot or to buy the wrong bike on my first time, so I really want to make sure I pick right.

Bought a Diamondback response sport last year. Finally getting some use out of it. Planning a big trip next year ~217 miles.

LOVE riding mine now, what questions do you have? I'll try to answer them.

I don't know much about bikes, but I do know this. A few months ago I went on a biking trip with one of my friends, I didn't have a street bike so I borrowed one of his. The bike I borrowed wasn't exactly a street bike, it was a hybrid of a street bike and a mountain bike, but leaning more towards the street side. It was enjoyable, it had the speed of a street bike and chillness of a mountain bike. I'll get pictures and names later when I find out.

Well, since I'm going to be spending my excess money, I'm not looking to spend a whole lot over 250$, but I know that won't really get me a good bike (which isnt what I was expecting anyways).
I guess I'm just trying to figure out if there are any good ways to buy used bikes since my budget is tight at the moment?I was thinking craigslist or something but I'm not sure.
I was even considering finding old bike parts or something and maybe building my own?But I wasn't sure if that was realistic..I'm totally new to this and have no idea what to do, and I don't want to walk into some store like target or wal mart and buy a bike or anything..

my bike is my main source of transportation, i would say go on craigslist if you're trying to find a bike for cheap, and if the route is hilly look for something with multiple gears and all of that shit so you dont wear yourself out and if it is all road i would look for a light bike with thin tires with little tread. dont buy a heavy ass mountain bike if youre not gonna ride in the woods and shit

Seriously,

You don't need anything high dollar. If you decide to go that route, it will likely get stolen. Buy something street worthy, but somewhat stylish. Something like a hybrid. Make sure it fits you. Make sure you invest in a good lock for it.

cheapest new road bike you can get is 600 dollars, like a trek entry level bike. You can find used ones on cragislist though, just be careful.
