I have been having problems with l4d2 also. I have a 2.66 ghz Phenom Quad Core, 4GB ram, and a 9800 gt and am only getting 40 fps on hordes. If this is your case just know that I have tried about everything and it is the game not your computer list your specs so I can help you further.

I was running Windows 7 64 bit and thought that was the problem. I went to 32 bit. That didn't make a difference, and overall my setup should be doing better so I recommend you wait for them to fix the bug.

Just list your current specs and maybe you can even just upgrade instead of a new comp?

If you have everything turned up, 40fps sounds about right.

If you can install your own OS, and can handle some assembly:

$300
Barbones Quad core intel core2, 4gb ram, and psu

$50
WD black edition 640 gig (one of the best drives on the market)

$134
GTX260

$20
Dvd writer

This comes in around $500 which I know is your upper end, but you could go cheaper on your barebone setup.
