Hello everyone. As a lot of you may know, i just started building a computer...

Here it is...
https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=8097786&WishListTitle=New+Build

as promised.. here is my tutorial(not complete)(and not professional,) if you see errors...PLEASE notify me. I know what I'm doing, but I'm not proficient in putting it on "paper."

I'm sorry, i didn't take pictures of my installation of my Power Supply...I didn't think i was going to do the tutorial at the time of me installing it. Its a very basic thing to do though, screws line up, switches go to the outside. Cables face towards the front of the case.

Here is my motherboard... nothing done to it yet.
Image

Image

I went ahead and pulled all of the passive heatsinks off and re-applied a good thermal compound. I personally prefer Arctic Silver 5. You pull the pins off (be careful not to break them)(also, be careful not to lose the springs[i'm still missing one ;) ]) and pull the copper off, put a VERY thin layer of AS5 on there (like a dot...seriously) and spread it w/ the tip of a card (i used an old credit card). Make sure it's spread evenly.

Image

Mount them back in their correct places making sure that you screw them in tightly(but not too tight to break the MOBO.)

Then you are going to need to pull out your processor and clean the top(dull metal piece) with a rag and rubbing alcohol. Do the same w/ the bottom of the Zalman cooler. Pull the plastic piece out of the CPU holding mount and place the CPU in there and close it shut.

Here is a picture of it w/ the Zalman brackets and the plastic covering on it.
Image

Mount the Zalman Cooler's brackets(both bottom and top and then place a thin layer of AS5 on the cleaned CPU top. (once again, the thinner the better, you just want to make sure that you have an equal layer across the surface of the shield. And then the smallest dot you can possibly manage to put in the middle, put it there. If you think you put too much, then you probably did.

Image

Image

Mount your Zalman to the CPU/Its brackets. It will come w/ a weird bracket type thing, you can figure that out. Pretty basic. You want to make sure that the Fan is facing the RAM or if your mounting it while in case...its exhaust is facing to an exhaust fan on the case.

Image

Now is a good time to address the Fan I/Cole ghetto rigged onto the North bridge (the big copper thing beside the bigger copper thing) Yes, those are zip ties. I took the Silver thing off the top(refer to the pictures up top of the "ULTRA DURABLE EXTREME BLAH BLAH BLAH" yea, i took that off and zip tied a fan to that. I think its a 60mm. not sure. Cole can confirm it. It will come in crucial when i get to higher voltages in my Overclocking.

Here's a good pic with nothing on the copper North Bridge cooler.
Image

Insert the RAM...
Image

And now is the time to mount the MOBO to the Case.
Image

There are holes in MOBO that will coincide with mounting brackets inside the case. You can figure that out, i didn't feel pictures were necessary. If you made it this far, you will figure it out.

Now, when you are air cooling your CPU air flow is VERY important! You want NO wires running across your MOBO unless 100% necessary. Wire management is VERY important.

Image
thats the back of the case(hidden wires can be taped/strapped here coming from the Power Supply to wherever needed on the MOBO)
--------------------------> is the top. So, keep that in mind. I was taking that pic pretty late last night. So... yea.

Now you plug things in to your MOBO.
Here is the power cord.
Image

Here is Cole pluggin in the 4pin. I had a hard time with it.(i have fat fingers)
Image
Notice he cut himself on my Zalman. I think i'm going to sell it to he highest bidder.

THE stackableNut's blood. Its gotta be worth...something.

I cut myself on it too though... :)
Image

So..beware.. those fins are sharp!

Everything except my DVD/RW's SATA cable and My HDD's SATA cables are ran here. All of my fan Power cables are in the back of my case or under my power supply. All of my front cables are ran through the back and up under near my Power Supply entrance gap.

Image

I unfortunately don't have a good pic of the SATA cables. It was late by this time. once again...sleepy.

BUT, in so many words, that is a build. Not too hard. Install an OS/drivers(normally come w/ MOBO) and your on your way.

As a typical rule, take the stock voltage of your chip, multiply it by 1.20 (20% overvolt) and this is the max "safe" over voltage on air, but normally is too much for air (the temps get too high)
-My AMDx2 = 1.35*1.20= 1.62 I ran mine at 1.55 (temps were getting high)
-Current Core2 65nm = 1.325*1.2 = 1.59 (I have never ran one over 1.5)
-New Core2 45nm = 1.15*1.2= 1.38, there has been numerous reports that sustaned voltage ABOVE 1.40 (EVEN 1.41) has caused chip derogation, this is where the chip need more and more voltage to run high speeds, and normally is on the way to being trash. Alot of these people have pushed it to 1.5v for testing reasons, which is stupid, keep it at or below 1.38 and you will have 0 problems.

Also there is a rate of diminishing returns with voltage because the actual chip has a limit of what it can do (unless the chip undergoes extreme cooling, like nitrogen and such).

On my old AMD the chip was a 2.4, known MAX overclock of this chip was about 2.8-3.0, I was running air.
On stock 1.35 voltage I could get about 2.55 @ 32 degrees
on 1.45 I could get about 2.65 @35 degrees
on 1.55 I could get 2.75 @ 40 degrees <--- this is where I put it for 2 years
on 1.65 I could only get 2.8 @ 60 degrees <--- you see this did not give me much, but gave me HUGE temps

Now that my build is done. I started on my Overclocking process... at this time, i am ONLY working on my CPU. The above should be a decent explanation to what these #'s mean. These is my current progress. Ill update it semi-regularly.

very nice, i think we can all appreciate the work you put into making this for us. i cant really edit anything on the side of putting the parts together etc, however, if you have the time, go into paint and circle the parts in the pics you are talking about for all of us nubs.

other than that nicely done,
props

Yeah, I remember when I picked up that cooler by the fins, and immediately dropped it, shouting "OH FUCK" and cutting my 2 of my fingers. Don't know what I was thinking...

P.S. Cole, I dig the beard 8)

awesome awesome....

i'm currently running Prime 95 for 24hrs. @ 3.8GHz @ 1.368V

I am now working on Memory Voltage/Strappers. 14 hrs stable...as we speak. (very surprising) i didnt think i would be.

My memory is ddr2 1066, i'm running it at 1015...i'll see if i cant get closer later. I'll post my notes from my other computer later.

Just an idea of how much work goes into a real over clocking.
