Technical Issues FAQ

Please read here before posting any issues troubling you!

No. 1
Q: Counter-Strike is running unusually dog slow. My ping is skyrocketing when it used to be fine or my ping is high when I know it has nothing to do with location or insufficient computer hardware.

A: You may need to set your rates. To set your rates, you will need to go into console and type the following commands:

Code:
rate 25000
cl_cmdrate 40
cl_updaterate 40

Q: I'm tired of the ordinary sprays (such as the Skull, Half-Life Symbol, or Smiley Face). How to I create a custom spray like I see other people using?

A:
Check out Stack's guide on How to make your own sprays:

Q: Every time I log onto Steam, it gives me an error message such as, "Steam Temporarily Unavailable, Try Again Later." or When I try to launch a game off of Steam, such as Counter-Strike, Steam tells me that, "Game is Currently Unavailable." I have already restarted my computer.

A:
The problem may not be with you, but with Steam instead. A common bug is with a file in Steam called clientregistry.blob. The easiest way to fix it, is to delete it.

To do this, you need to go into your Steam directory. This can be found in either of two places (make sure you have Steam closed, first):

C:\Program Files\Steam

or
C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam

Once deleted, Steam will redownload a fresh one when you start it next time - and your issue should be solved!

Q: When I play ingame, I hear an echo everywhere I go.

A:
It's a common bug that can be easily fixed. You need to go into your Console and type the following: room_type 1

No. 5
Q: I herd other people talking about using custom skins on their default weapons. How do I install skins and sounds?

A:
Look at the Installing Skins and Sounds on Condition Zero Tutorial

No. 6

Q: My mic is not working or it is very low

A:
There are a couple of solutions to troubleshoot this issue. Here are some tips:

1. Make sure your microphone is plugged into the right port all the way
2. Check the Windows' Audio and Microphone panel to make sure your microphone is not muted and up fully
3. In Counter-Strike - make sure your Voice Enable is on. To do this, type voice_enable 1 in console.
4. Download the latest Sound Card drivers for your computer. This is especially true if you have reformatted your computer and haven't already done so.
5. Test your microphone in another computer. Your mic may be broken and not functional at all.
6. In Counter-Strike - make sure on the Voice Tab under Options, the Voice bars are set all the way to the right. Check Boost Microphone Gain if needed as well.

Q: When I try to open up a game in Steam, it tells me I need to buy it, but I've already bought it - what gives?

A:
Don't worry, it's another frequent Steam bug. The solution is typically simple: restart Steam. If that doesn't work, try deleting your clientregistry.blob (directions can be found on No. 3) or restart your computer.

***NEED the help from the entire community - this FAQ is no where near finished. If you have posted a technical issue that you have had in the past and have the solution - please post! Or, if you have any issues that you know of that are commonly done, please post as well. Also, someone correct me on the 'rates' list to make sure I covered everything completely. I'll plug in all your posts, and then delete them all once I get through 'em, and of course give credit where it's due.
Thanks!

(and I wouldn't mind PePTo if you would edit my grammatical errors  )

Q: i can't see my spray or anyone elses! on surf_icebob i can't see the "L" "TOP" "R" writings at the gun area! how come i see black spots on some maps on the floor?!

A: Keep entering random servers till your spray works again (it's what i did 2 times and it works again) or do " gl_polyoffset "

Q: how do i get a music player thingy in-game?

A: You mean HLSS? Go to www.hlss.us and dl all the latest programs, and follow the steps carefully, and remember, don't spam it!

Except for Cursed's post, it's Updated.

Not adding how to do HLSS though, I protest anyone else having it (well, mainly just some pubbers that I know would spam the Spirito Santo out of it).

what should the fps_max be?

101 is default. The human eye only renders 70 so anything above 70 would be good enough!

Default is 72, 100 is the max (unless you go to developer 1 and then 1000 is the max). But yeah anything below 72 the human eye can see as being choppy. LCD monitors blur the image though, so 60 is considered fine for an LCD.

More in depth rate settings:

If you turn on net_graph 3 in console, the ##ms is the response time (aka "registry") , for a crap setup, it will be double your ping, if it is anywhere near your ping number (within 3-10) then you are properly setup.

Also look at your choke and loss, you want them both to be at 0 most of the time, if it spikes to 8 or so (like the beginning of the round), as long as it goes back to 0 for most of the time that is what you want.

Set in console (this is if you are in the US):
rate 30000
cl_cmdrate 40
cl_updaterate 40

Look at the choke and loss, if they are still nice (0-ish) move the rates up.

cl_cmdrate 60
cl_updaterate 60

60 is all that you need if you are running a LCD monitor due to the fact that they can only do 60fps, so 60 updates a second is all you need. If your choke and loss are fine, you are done, you can go higher, just watch for choke and loss, and if choke and loss go up and stay above 0, time to lower your rates.

I would lower them 5 at a time until you see that everything is good, then lower them another 5 just in case (for times of heavy network use).

Some people set them to the max (101) which is a dumb idea since you are never going to get that kind of performance out of your cable modem/dsl (101 is used for LAN GAMING ONLY). If you set it to 101 you are getting tons of loss and choke.

You may notice that your ping has gone up by like 10, this is normal, if your rates are too high or too low, there is loss (aka skipped packets) which drop your ping because they are skipped, but your reg is screwed

Edit by stack: I suggest that you do NOT do this, vsync is forced to on on my computer, the only time you want vsync off is when you are benchmarking, or playing a game that you are getting very low fps on (like below 30).

This is how you get 100 fps for your LCD monitor.

1. Go to your control panel and make sure it is on Classic View.

Image

2. Find and open your Nvidia Control Panel.

Image

3. When you open up your Nvidia Control Panel, make sure it is on Advanced View.

Image

4. Then go to your 3d settings on the left side.

Image

5. Finally scroll all the way down, then you will see vertical Sync and force it off.

Image

My settings are in Korean, but you can still find everything.

Trouble shooting.

1. Q. I do not have Nvidia Control Panel. Why?

A. Download drivers from the Nvidia site. http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

2. Q. I have Nvidia Control Panel, but I can not put it as Advanced View. Why?

A. There are different ways to do this, and it's different for everyone. Here is an example.

Go to your desktop and right click it. Then click properties, settings tab, advanced, click the nvidia card, then it will load something. After that there should be a little scroll bar and at the bottom, add verical sync, highlight it, and uncheck the application controlled.

You should be able to just view it as advanced, but if you can't, try to do that.

Any other questions, ask :)

White cat, that will not get your monitor to do 100fps, all you did was disable vsync, which disables the sync between the video card and the monitor, letting the computer output 100fps.

What this does is allow the game to run whatever fps it wants (100+) but the monitor is still running at 60fps (so 60fps is still what you actually see), also you get tearing and shudders because they will not be on the same frequency.

For the best quality you always want vsync turned on.

(THANKS BOOMER FOR THIS AWESOME TIP)

Q: I want better ping, fps, and registry, even though i have an LCD monitor, how can I improve it?

A: Go to console and type "Developer 1" (without the quotes), this should allow you to change your FPS_max to w/e your computer can handle, I have an LCD monitor and i'm running at 200 FPS and when you set your fps_max to w/e it can handle, your registry and ping will improve too. Oh and if you surf with Developer on, it's gonna stop your periodically, so turn it off on surf maps.
