Post subject:  Fucking Internet...

Alright, so, I got a new laptop...

And I connected to the internet with it. I used a different ethernet cord. I unplugged the one that was already in my modem, which goes to my desktop, and plugged the new one in. I used the internet, no problems...

Now, I put the old cord back into the modem and tried to use the internet on my desktop again... At first, I couldn't even pull up the internet. I fiddled around for a while, set up the network again(I think that's what I did), and now the internet is fine... Except I can't fucking check my e-mails.... Does anyone know what's going on? And how I can avoid this in the future when switching the internet between laptop/desktop?

Also, my laptop is supposed to have wireless. It even has a switch. Yet, when I go somewhere with wireless, I can't connect... Anyone know why?

"Spend more money!"

That's what you just said.

"Spend the money you don't have!"

Just thought I'd translate for everyone...

Congratulations on the new addition!!!!!

When switching from new computers on only a modem with no router, remember to unplug the modem for 10 seconds, and replug it back in. Router's are top dogs, though. Things remember IP addresses and mac addresses, so you're cool plugging in and out with it (yeah I know... useless information in your situation).

When you enter a wireless area, remember to configure it's access in the Windows Wireless Configuration window (could be titled differently) and configure it to connect to the hub. It's really easy... just click the wireless connection name and hit connect.

And remember to install the latest drivers and updates for the most successful experience with your new laptop. These tips taken together will help make your ownership experience a good one.

Good Luck!

So, if I unplug my modem for 10 seconds... Can I check my e-mails?

No (lol), when it's unplugged, your Internet connection goes down. Let it go for ten seconds to let it refresh, cycle the power back on, let all the lights come on, and then plug the laptop back in.

I meant after I plug the modem back in...

And I'm trying to check my e-mails on my desktop. I don't care about the laptop right now. I've done what I needed to with it.

And the reason I asked about the wireless is because I wanted to know for college. I don't want to have to install a piece of hardware in my dorm room to connect...

You might have to install a small wireless router (if your neighbor or rommate doesnt have one)

Probably not... it would be likely that they provide wi-fi in that area.

To do with wireless: The laptop you got, might not actually have wireless inbuilt in it. Meaning you might have to wireless card to put in the laptop.

I know you have no money to spend, but it could be the only reason?

To do with emails: I'm kinda guessing your email account is hosted with the ISP.

I dunno if this is for every company, but normally on their website they a section where you can login to check emails via that.

I know all the ISP's we have been with we can always go on the website to check our emails... <-- sorry if that is Completely wrong, and I misread the whole email/internet thing.

most colleges work off of a LAN network so you dont really need to care about wifi unless your going to a library. All new laptops today usually come with some wifi card already built in so you really shouldn't have to worry about that.

Is there a Help? menu for the site that hosts your email?
