Herd about the new nVIDIA chips that came out recently. Been kind of busy though, and haven't been able to research it myself. Now that I have a job though, I'll be able to afford a new one - which is really all I need (sucks not being able to play new games on full on 1280x1024 resolution. My 7900 is not as much of a work-horse as my previous (!!) 5200 was, lawl).

So, any suggestions?

I believe that the $600.00 is best left in my pocket. :)

Talk to me in TS for some in depth GT200 info.

But for the short version of it,
GTX280 = way too much money for the power, it only matches the 9800gx2 in power but for $150 more
GTX260 = still too expensive right now, it will be the chip to get when it drops below $300

They are both still 65nm, low yields, once they drop to 55nm the yields will go up, prices will drop, temps will drop, and it will be a better buy. This is going to happen really soon, already happend in the 9 series, they shrunk the G92 again, and called it a 9800gtx"+" and it is about $220 (not a bad buy).

The GT200 processor is the largest chip TSMC has ever built. It literally is larger than 4 Penryn's
Image

Dollar for power right now its a bad buy, a 8800gts 512 (170), 9800gtx (200_ or gtx + (220), or a 4850 (175) and 4870 (300) are all better chips at this moment for the price. The 4850 tends to beat the 9800GTX fyi, but has no physics....

All of that being said, I AM getting one. They are bad ass, but I will get one that is 55nm and well under 400 bucks.

Also, nvidia now has physics (PhysX) on all their cards (series 8 and newer) but only a few, the GT200's and the 9800's have them enabled, next month any 8 series or newer will get physics enabled on card.

So I assume the drop to 55nm will happen near the same time as when the 9800GTX+ comes out (July 16th)?

And if not, do you think the 9800GTX+ would by a good buy? Sorry, just a little impatient..

This is what I have been reading from:

55nm gtx200, Nope, not as soon, but that would be great.

But here is the deal, the 4850 beats the 9800gtx+, and cost (after rebates) around $20-40.
http://techreport.com/articles.x/14967/5

So for about 30 bucks less (180 vs 210) you get the same or more power, up to 30% more.

Then for 300 bucks you can get a 4870 that is right in the middle between the 4850 and the GTX260 (price and power).
http://techreport.com/articles.x/14990/10

So from a value (power for dollar) standpoint here are Cole's picks for today:
$140 9600gt
$200 4850
$300 4870
$400 GTX260 or 2-4850's
$600 GTX280 or 2-4870's

Like I said, if the GTX260 drops 50-100 bucks, then its worth it, but right now nvidia has no winner in the 200-300 range, but the 9800gtx+ is not a bad card, but is not the best buy for the dollar.

Nvidia has physics on the card now though, but ATI has DX10.1 (nvidia is 10.0).

Your still looking at nvidia only. There are quite a few GREAT ATI GPU's available. Would be a shame to not look into these. There is alot to be had for a little bit of money.

Like I said, nvidia dropped prices of the GTX2x0 series by up to 90 bucks.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... rder=PRICE

Another price drop is expected by month end, but now it is worth the money for the GTX260.

My picks are as follows, for the 260s:

$330
ASUS GTX260 (stock clock)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814121257

or

$380
XFX GTX260 free COD4 game Overclocked (640 vs 576cpu and 2300 vs 2000 memory) this is my pick for the free game that I would actually play

Just fyi

My case is fucking huge - Cole will vouch for me.

However, the 200 series cards are VERY MASSIVE. I've seen nothing even come close to this bemoeth. The first time I saw this thing vs. the inside of my case - I just kinda muttered, "shit."

Luckily, it barely fits. But it def. is a damn good card - plays every game I own on full, with blazing fast FPS.

It also runs very cool. Temp issues should not be a problem.

did you re-seat the the fan w/ arctic silver?

also, do you know how big a 9800 GX2 is?

I've got some pics of mine side by side w/ one. My GPU is massive. the GX2 was HUGE!

Also, what did you get on 3dmark 06 and have you tried crysis?

Gratz on the new card.

Yeah, I'm sure it's hella big, but I'm talking length. I don't know how long the GX2 is, but the `cking 260 is REALLLLLY long. Plus the damn thing took up my last PCI slot just hovering over it - but I assume that's expected with most cards nowadays that have huge heatsinks.

Haven't tried either of them. I'll do the 3dMark tests soon, but I'm not interested in playing Crysis - even just for an FPS review.
