I would avoid the NV motherboard, get the amd board (I prefer to get the
790 gigabyte board).
These boards may not bolt up in your HP though, who knows, non standard is the standard for dell/hp etc.
As for windows, if you have your windows disk, here is the secret (for xp):
Take your XP disk, be in windows and put the disk in. It will come up and ask you what you want to do, chose the UPGRADE option. It will install some files while in windows (and strip out all your drivers, this is good), then it will reboot, at this point turn off your computer before it boots into windows, change out the hardware, re-install drivers, all your program files will still be there
Using this method I took a drive from an AMD computer, put it into an Intel computer and had no problems.
All this being said, I am a big reformat guy, if your OS is old, why put that cluttered OS on a new computer instead of starting fresh?
