Thread title. Buying a new laptop for college. I was offered a laptop with a nVIDIA GeForce 8600M today at a computer shop, but I thought it was a bit outdated so I didn't end up buying that one. I want to eventually be able to run DirectX10 apps/games, so yeah.

Also, I'm wondering about Windows Vista 32bit vs 64bit. I was told that 32bit is what I want since almost all applications are 32bit, and 64bit would not be backward compatible with all programs - is this accurate? How come Dell only offers 64bit Vista on certain laptops?

Anyone that knows anything about this - please post your opinions and I'll love you forever. :D

Thanks.

First, up, not true about 64 bit. 64 bit IS backwards compatible with 32 bit, but NOT 16 bit (DOS apps). 32 bit DRIVERS do not work on 64, but everything has 32 and 64 bit drivers. My computer is Vista 64bit, no problems here.

GTS260m is a good card, it matches a 9800gt, and is about 4x as powerful as the 8600.

Gotcha. Well, I guess I don't need to worry about which version of Vista to get anymore since my college requires 32bit for some reason (just read this on their website...). When Windows 7 comes out, I could always switch to 64bit. Anyway, thanks for the info. I just put in my order:

Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T9300
Video Card: nVIDIA GeForce GTS 260M
CD/DVD drive: DVD+-RW drive
Memory: 4 GB
Hard drive: 320GB SATA Hard Drive 7200RPM
Operating System: Windows Vista Ultimate (32 bit)
Warranty: 4-year extended, on-site warranty
Network cards: Intel® PRO/Wireless 4965a/g/n Mini Card

Custom order from Dell - my dad knows the owner of a computer store that is partnered with Dell, so the guy is talking to Dell to try to get a laptop built with those parts. Can't guarantee you'll be able to do the same thing...if not, I think the XPS m1730 is a good choice if you're gonna play games. It's priced between $1699 and $2400 depending on what parts you want.
