Alright, so, I'm looking to get more memory.

I currently have 1gb of RAM (two 512mb sticks)

And I have two more empty slots for ram

So, my question is: Can I put 2 1gb sticks in the remaining slots so I have a total of 3gb?

(My system has 4gb memory max)

Here's my answer to the best of my knowledge. Adding different size modules will work however you might not get the maximum performance out of them. If the memory speeds are different they will all work on the lowest module speed you have installed. Having as few modules as possible would increase that performance so I might recommend taking off both 512 modules and installing the 2x1 GB modules. DDR2 in general works best with matching pairs.

Cole would know more about this I hope I'm not wrong.

Pretty much exactly what sword said.

If you download CPUZ you can get the exact specs of the memory (speed and latency) then you can match it up with 2x1gb sticks and get 3gb. Just like he said above if your current memory, or new memory have higher latency or lower speed, the other sticks will run at whatever the lowest performance stick is.
