If the memory speeds are different they will all work on the lowest module speed you have installed. Having as few modules as possible would increase that performance so I might recommend taking off both 512 modules and installing the 2x1 GB modules. DDR2 in general works best with matching pairs.

If you download CPUZ you can get the exact specs of the memory (speed and latency) then you can match it up with 2x1gb sticks and get 3gb. Just like he said above if your current memory, or new memory have higher latency or lower speed, the other sticks will run at whatever the lowest performance stick is.
