This is my list so far

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Publi ... r=11121805

I think this is a pretty good system. Should run l4d and source engine games just fine. I would get a better video card, but I am trying to stay below $600. I also have to pay tax and shipping so thats like another $75 right there.

If I do end up building this, my brother will be buying my current computer from me for $200. So that should help me out. Plus I already have a keyboard+mouse+monitor. I will move my current comp one over to the home server monitor for my brother.

Don't buy a Phenom 1, the performance on those are abysmal, the Phenom IIs fixed the issues, but only got them up to the performance (clock for clock) of the 65nm Core2's, and the 45nm Core2's do about 10% more clock for clock.

Buy a 45nm AMD, even if its the L3 cache-less Athlon 2's. Both the Athlon II and Phenom IIs come in 2, 3, and 4 core, and have the same core, but the Phenom II's L3 cache gives it a nice boost in performance.

Do yourself a huge favor and do an AM3 setup, besides the above reasons, it will give you room for future upgrades, the AM3 WILL support a 6 core chip that will be out next year.

Within 20 bucks you can get a Quad Athlon II x4 setup (faster than the chip you posted), 4gb of DDR3, and a motherboard that will take the next gen chip:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231190
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131402

If you KNOW you are going to upgrade the CPU sometime, maybe a year or so, get a Phenom II X2, for the same price as the AthlonII x4, it will run higher ghz, more cache, and give you much better single and dual thread speed, the fact its only a dual, not a quad wont matter for the next year, and after that you can buy a PhenomII X6. Also it is a black edition chip (multiplier unlocked), so you can overclock it to 3.4-3.8ghz no problem, and alot of people have had luck enabling that chip to an X4 with just turning on ACC in bios, so possible free 2 more cores.

Awesome, I think you will like this build. In about 1-2 years, you could spend another 200-400 on it, and have a monster rig. Get the 6 core Phenom II x6 and a GTX360 video card (about 4-5x more powerful than your 9800), and move your 9800 down a slot and make it physics dedicated, and maybe add another 4gb of ram.

Lol you're so persuasive. If my computer ever craps on me or there's a game that I'll need a better comp for I'm gonna go to you for the info.

If I upgrade to the new chip in a year or so, will the 500watt PSU be able to power everything

Your PSU =Output: +3.3V@25A,+5V@25A,+12V1@18A,+12V2@18A,
-12V@0.3A,+5VSB@2.5A

So it has 36amps on the 12v rail (12v rail is all matters on modern computers, not even watts anymore). Which is plenty, your card only needs like 20. But if you are going to upgrade, you may want to get something a little more beefy.

I have this PSU (it is the old top-of-the-line OCZ from 2-3 years back), but has 72 AMPS!
They no longer carry it, but here is a refurb:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817341034

The only issue I have with mine, is that it has plenty of power, but only 2 PCIe connectors (a 6 and a 8 pin) which I use to power my 9800GX2, and it has plenty of juice to run 4 video cards, I would just have to use some 4pin molex to PCIe adapters.

This is the next PSU that I am buying, awesome reviews online, with 4 PCIe connectors. I had never heard of seasonic, but turns out they make the parts for like 75% of the PSU makers out there.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817151083

I would get one of these (or any of the above ones) if I were you:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817139006
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817371026
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817371025

OR
Go with the one you were going to get, and upgrade PSU in the future too (and have a spare PSU for a server or whatever).

Might order it this weekend. Has a promo code, free shipping, and a rebate (which I would like to mail ASAP!)

Awesome, also, this will make you happy... Bulldozer is AMD's next gen chip, due in 2011, will be 4/8 core, each core have twin integer units, so kinda like hyperthreaded but much better, each core will show up in the OS as 2 cores.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulldozer_%28processor%29
http://techreport.com/discussions.x/17948

Why does this matter to you?... because amd is saying it will be socket AM3 compatible, so hopefully just a bios update for you, but there is always a chance that it won't work on your board.

I don't see a video card on that link anymore, did you remove it or change it?
