Hey guys,

For some reason, as of lately my FPS has been really low at times, for example if I turn on Night vision, my FPS goes down to about 8, and sometimes just normally playing it will go down to about 20. I have no idea why this is happening now.

Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening?

The CPU and GPU are the 2 most important areas to keep clean, since they have a heatsink that can clog and block airflow. Like vman said, check for dust, and check to see if the fan even is working.

You could setting the priority higher in processes in task manager of the game. Also try to make sure nothing else is running like AIM or Xfire or anything else using your processor.

start, run, cmd
chkdsk /r
y
reboot, let it run (can take up to 2 hrs).

Defrag

Remove any antivirus program you have, then download Microsoft security essentials and run a full scan.
http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Open steam, right click your game, defrag local content, and also verify files.

Before I do that^

Why is, svhost.exe taking up 50CPU and System Idle Process taking up about 45CPU? At the moment, my cpu usage is about 60-80

System idle process is your available (unused) cpu %, for example an idle computer will say 99% on the system idle.

Svhost.exe is a virus/worm (if you do all the steps I told you above, especially the antivirus from Microsoft, you will be fine). In fact, whenever you can, click on the svhost and end task on it, it may come right back though, until it is removed.

Now if that is a typo, and you mean "svchost.exe" (notice the C in there), that is a generic name that microsoft uses for alot of things, mainly services and dll's. It is a process that runs many behind the scenes windows process. If it svchost, and stays using your computer like it is all the time, then let me know and I will walk you through on how to expand svchost to individual services so we can track down the problem.

Sorry, yes it is "Svchost.exe" and it's still at 50, goes up more than it goes down.

If you could help me to sort this problem, that would be good :) thank you.

Nevermind, I've done it. Just seemed like that I had to update to XP SP3.

Facepalm, everyone out there, please please please, keep your computer on the most recent service pack for your OS, it will make things run much better.

To check your service pack, right click "Computer" or "My computer" and hit properties, it should say your SP#. XP is currently on SP3, vista is on SP2, and 7 has not released (well, the beta is out) SP yet.

Just in case this ever comes back up storm, download process explorer (it is like a task manager on steroids):
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi ... 96653.aspx

Its free and distributed by systernals and microsoft, so its safe. Once you install it and run it, you can then look at your process in question and it will give you detailed info, and in the case of scvhost and some other process, you can expand it and see exactly what sub-process is causing the problem and can normally google the sub process to find the fix.

Can normal anti viruses remove this or do we have to use the Microsoft antivirus thing to remove it? my old computer has like 20 of these running all the time, and since it looked legit to me I never knew it was a virus.
