The fastest computers are are intel's Core I7, but for me to price one out, would of bumped up the cost to $1200. So instead I spec-ed out a high end AMD quad system (their fastest chip).
Here is a quick one I threw together, the total was $920 before shipping.
Quad Phenom II 3.4ghz, 4gb ram, fast 640gb hard drive, dvd burner, etc. The motherboard will hold 2 video cards, so you can buy a 2nd card and run them in crossfire/sli in the future. The video card I put in there is not exactly really powerful, but will get the job done, if he can afford another $150, I would say wait until next month and get a GTX470 when it comes out, or just upgrade the card in the future. This board will also accept AMD's 6 core processors when they come out later this year.
