Well, I got a virus. I was trying to download the latest DivX so I could watch tv shows on ninjavideo when this "antivirus soft" window popped up. I tried clicking out but it still appeared and thats when everything else started to happen. I keep getting sent to porn sites or to the viagra site. There are also red shields with a X in the middle spamming the task bar saying stuff like "Windows Security alert Application cannot be executed. The file wscntfy.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?". I some how downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials with Coles help. So I ran a full scan and it said there was a detected item "Exploit:HTML/Repl.D" so I removed it. But I still keep getting pop ups and such. I ever ran a second full scan and it said everything was fine :(. Sometimes I can't get to certain programs cause it says, "Application cannot be executed. This file 'blah blah blah' is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?

I don't know why but I updated microsoft security essentials. After it updated it said that there was 1 detected item so I think I pressed the clean button....and now everything looks fine. there isn't any red shields with a white x in the middle spamming the task bar....

Use Malware like Cursed said.. It should detect any unwanted programs.. If needs be, I can check through your hijackthis logs, and I can tell you what to fix using the program w/ it. Pretty easy to use, and it helps get rid of anything bad it detects.

:)

Agreed. My primary arsenal for Virus removal at work consists of Malwarebytes, MSE, and Combofix.

IF those three don't remove it. THen i will format.

Malwarebytes would not install for her, the only thing we could use that actually worked in this situation was Microsoft security essentials... and it worked.

Gigi, if you want go to www.hijackthis.de - try and install the program (or use a flashdrive) run the program, once you have the log either private message me or post it here and I can check it out, it could help see if there is an unwanted program blocking you downloading other programs.

for further reference.

Some viruses are deleting the mbam.exe file straight from the start. If you have access to another computer(or to the internet from the same computer) Google the Trojan(ie, AV2010 et. al.) along with Bleeping Computer. Likely, you will find a removal guide.

They tend to work fairly well.

Thats how we actually fixed her computer, well kinda. We did not know the name of the trojan, but I had her give me the exact error and used a bleeping computer removal guide, ran a couple of command line programs, then were able to install Microsoft security essentials, and clean.

You're talking about rkill.

It does a GREAT job. However, it will kill your 3rd party wireless software if you are running it. So, make sure you only use Rkill if you are connected at a lan, or if you have your software already downloaded
