Hi all,

My Sister's (Mine originally) laptop died - most likely the power supply. She recently bought a new one, but she wants to retrieve some data (Music and files) from the harddrive. I've confirmed that the HDD is still running, but I don't know how to retrieve it. I've been using a Laptop Harddrive adapter, however I haven't been able to connect it, I get an error (I will post back the error, can't remember it)

If anyone knows how to do it, I'll apperciate it.

Many thanks,

S.

I was about to suggest that you could use a LiveCD but I guess that doesn't work if the computer's dead.

Couldn't you rip the hard drive out?

Try the refrigerator? If it's dead doesn't hurt to try.

If the laptop has a SATA drive, you can just plug it into a desktop computer and pull data off the drive.

I've come across a laptop drive that had a pin adapter on the top, but when you pulled that off, it was a regular SATA.

Check this out as well.

Yeah, I was there that day too, huge WTF moment. If I remember right it was a laptop that Bryan called us into his office to look at, saying it had some really weird connector, we literally googled it for 30 minutes and were all amazed/dumbfounded by this weird vertical fin style connectors, then I grabbed it, and pulled it off, and sata/sata power plugs were behind it... fail.

In case you were wondering here is IDE(PATA/ATA) connector vs SATA: The IDE you will need an adapter, the SATA can plug into your desktop.

I've got an IDE one, and I also have a Laptop Hard Drive Adapter which is this: http://www.datarecoverytutorial.com/wp- ... dapter.jpg

I've heard this is the only way to actually connect the laptop HDD to the desktop but I just don't know how.
