So, i'm thinking about upgrading my current Nvidia 8600GT graphics card to something a bit more better and possibly long term, i've had this graphics card for nearly 2/3 years, which has also needed a new fan.

Current graphics card- http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8600.html

I'm currently looking at the Nvidia GTX460 which is roughly £125-£150 ($192-$230)

Any ideas on what graphics card I should go for and would work for what I want it to do? (Play games, college work etc)

Thanks in advance...

Gtx460 is "the" card to get, easily 2x the power of a 9800, about 50% more power than a gtx260, and a very affordable price. I have the 1gb version, it has more memory and 1 more ROP unit enabled. The GTX560 will be out in a month or 2, but will only be around 10% more powerful (it is the same chip, just fully enabled, the current chip had 1 of the 8 clusters disabled).

And to make sure (Hopefully this isn't a silly question) - it should be compatible with my computer, correct?

Is there room for the card and does the computer have good cooling? It's longer than the 8600 and will generate more heat while gaming (will run cooler at idle), but shorter and cooler than a gtx260.

Is your power supply large enough (what power supply do you have, how many watts, and if you can see the sticker on it, look at the amps of the @12v rail or rails. (like 18a@12v, 22a@12v)? It also requires 2 6pin pci express power connectors, but typically come with an adapter in box, that converts 2 molex connectors into a 6 pin pci express power plug. So you need at least one of these, on the psu:

Because the card will come with one of these:

That's my PSU, from the looks of it, I only have one 6-pin PCI-E

Reminds me that I need to pick up one of those.

Your PSU has enough amps (35), and has the needed connector, as long as the card you get includes an adapter.
