Describe loud. Is it making any type of clicking noises? Is it spinning up and then spinning down rapidly?

Yeah, some drives are just loud, clicking is fine (like the normal clicking), but as Chris said, a repeating click, like you hear the normal clicking than a loud clack, or the spin down, then spin up is bad.

I suggest a SSD for the primary drive, they are 100,000x faster in best case (random access), and minimum 5x faster in worst case (sequential access).

128gb M4 SSD for $99

Plus something like this (1TB for storage)

A couple of months ago my 1 TB took a dump on me. I started a help ticket with Western Digital and after all support was exhausted and the hard drive couldn't be fixed, they told me that they couldn't do anything because it was out of warranty. I sent them an email saying something like, So I guess y'all build hard drives long enough to cover them working over the warranty period and that's it... After they reviewed my ticket weeks after the fact they said that they would replace it. I got a 2 TB in it's place :D

the sound isn't a clicking one. sounds like vibrations sort of, like banging against my case.
