Barcelona came out this year, send me a link to their next year's chip.
Iirc, Barcelona was released September, it's primary goal was to get AMD into the Quad-Core market (it's not a true Quad though, which why I wasn't going impressed with it in the first place). Yeah, there not as great performance wise compared to Core2 but I'm pretty sure they`re cheaper (I could be totally wrong about that though).
I don't know what there new chips are currently called, but they use AMDs newish K10 microtech. and I haven't seen any benchmarks on it.
On Topic though, Intel's chips performance compared to AMDs current chips are on the same level - it's just Penryn's overclock potential is huge, which like I said earlier, doesn't strike me as too impressive until I see what next year's AMD chips can do. If there more efficient at a lower clock rating, which I'm willing to bet will be the case, then I'm all in.
I dont see how you can say they compare to the same level. Maybe dollar/performance they compare, but clock for clock, current intel to current amd, intel is about 20% more powerful.
Maybe this is what you see, right now 2.6amd $120, 2.66intel, $190, but the amd would have to run at 3.2ghz to keep up with the 2.66intel, and on top of that, I have overclocked the 2.66intel to 3.4 many times (my roomate has a 2.16intel running at 3.4 for 2-3 months now). That amd would have to run at 4.08 to keep up with a 3.4 intel, and the amd's have trouble touching 3.0 (unless you buy the 3.2 which is their top chip, but cost 210).
So you can compare these 2 chips, because they will bench ~ the same, except the amd will make more heat.
2.66 Intel $190 (can overclock +.8ghz easily)
3.2 AMD $210 (can overclock +.2-.3ghz)
AMD's next chip is "# K10 microarchitecture - Also known as K8L, 10h, or Barcelona (after the first processor using this microarchitecture) the K10 microarchitecture is a new architecture with native quad core, shared level 3 cache, 128-bit floating point units, and HyperTransport 3.0." Which will be named Phenom for the desktop version.
So = Phemon = Barcelona, and here is a review, where they setup a Barcelona like a Phenom and tested it for games.

Here are some highlights:
"Things are different on the desktop; AMD hasn't been competitive since the launch of Core 2 in the Summer of 2006 and we're very worried that even after Phenom's late-year launch, the market still won't be competitive. While that's great for consumers today, the concern is that a non-competive AMD will bring about a more complacent Intel, which we do not want. We want the hungry Intel that we've enjoyed for the past year, we want ridiculous performance and aggressive pricing, and we won't get that without an AMD that can fight.
But AMD won't tell us anything about how Phenom will perform, other than that it will be competitive with Conroe/Kentsfield. So the goal here today is to get an idea of exactly how much faster Barcelona (
the same core that'll be in Phenom X4) will be compared to the Athlon 64 X2. "
"With a 10 - 15% increase in performance on average, Phenom should be more competitive than K8 was on the desktop"
So it looks like the phenom will only compete with the current intel chips, not the Penryn that will be out at the same time as Phenom, both are expected early 2008.
Then intel has a bad assssssss chip coming out 2009 (nehalm), 8 cores, using the same chip connect that amd uses (hyper transport) instead of the FSB, and on board memory controller (just like amd), plus a built in video processor to help offload the video card.
Edit: I am not biased in this, I just am stating the facts, this is what is really funny.... my last computer, that I used for over 1.5 years... is a AMD, my current computer, is a AMD, the teamspeak server is a AMD....... Display is using a Intel. I simply buy what is best at the time, but I really really do hope AMD produces a Intel crusher, that way intel will fire right back, the competition is great for us, the consumer, without amd we would all be using 4.2ghz pentium 4's right now (which has 1/4 the power of display's chip).
