Not looking good for AMD

http://techreport.com/articles.x/13633/1

As it look the Phenom catches last months Intel chips, at the same clock speed, unforuntualy intel's chips are clocked higher, and the new chips from this month are even more powerful.... AMD needs to step up and create some real competition!!!!

Quote:
he Phenom quite obviously isn't a bad CPU design, given the way it performs on a per-clock basis and how its performance scales from one to four threads. In many cases, its enhanced execution cores crank out some solid gains in instructions per clock over AMD's Athlon 64 X2. Also, the addition of two more cores can bring substantial performance increases in applications able to take advantage of them, as many of our tests have shown. But at the end of the day, CPU performance comes down to a couple of variables, performance per clock and clock speed, and the Phenom doesn't have enough of either to allow it to catch up with Intel's fastest 65nm Core 2 processors, let alone the even-more-potent 45nm ones. I sound like a broken record, but AMD is going to have to achieve something close to clock speed parity with Intel in order to compete for the overall performance lead. That's how closely these two architectures appear to be matched at this point.

i have an intel chip in my computer and an AMD in my mothers computer. My computer runs so much better than my moms (it could also be that mine is an alienware) but intel its really much better.

Bah-humbug. 2009 they have to have some kind of GPU integration with their CPUs. I just find it kind of fishy that their way behind (not really behind schedule) on really everything, like the quadcore game, etc. - and just really not preforming as it should. Watch out for the PowerPC's though, they'll make their comeback ....someday.

Intel's 2009 chips will be 8 core, hyperthreaded (16 threads), with a integrated gpu unit, and onboard memory controller.....

Even more problems for AMD, its called the errata bug, people try to overclock past 2.4, the default clock, the memory controller, which runs 400mhz faster than the core, and increases in 400mhz steppings, clocks to 3.2, instead of the default 2.8 and causes lockups, because amd's normally have trouble going past 3.0-3.1, with their current process tech.

So right now the phenom is grounded with 2.4ghz as the fastest (the 3.0 chip has been delayed to fix the errata bug (and the 1yr old intel quad 2.4ghz chip seems to still beat/match it in benchmarks)

..or.. you can get all of that for 1/3 of the price of an alienware :? Just take a little time, do a little research, and learn how to build a computer.
