Believe me, my argument wasn't to support Clinton; I couldn't agree with this quote more so:

Quote:
It's almost as if the presidents try to outdo each other by being shittier every year. You're being duped.

However, I will stand beside my main point: I hate George W. Bush. I also hate most politicians, in particular the ones telling me that freedom at home should be compromised to protect us from "terrorism."

No. I'm just not they type of person to buy into the hype.

I am not saying that controlling pollution would not be beneficial to the planet as a whole. I am just saying that I would like more proof than 100 yrs. of records and ~1 degree of change to tell me that we are making that large of an impact on the climate.

As I understood it the planet had a tendency to regulate its climate by shifting in and out of ice ages. Lets look a little further into this "theory" and see if this might have something to do with the rising temperatures.

I'm just not going to settle for fear mongering to make this decision for me. Especially when these same people are the biggest hypocrites to ever walk the earth with their jets and suv's and ridiculously large houses. (ahem Al Gore)

There may only have been a ~1 degree rise but think about how much our fuel consumption has increased over the last hundred years. The effect of CO2 emmissions isn't necessarily felt immediately, oceans absorb many of the suns rays re-emmited by greenhouse gases causing them to expand(over time due to their size.) Add to this the melting of the ice caps and of glaciers, and you can see how much of a problem it is.
Also, think how much of an effect that 1 degree has had. For the first time in centuries the North West Passage is ice-free. The frequency of natural disasters has increased and thousands have died. The people living on low lying Indonesian islands have been forced to leave as their homes have become modern day Atlantis'. And that's just one degree...

The hundred years of records means we can predict how much sea levels will rise, and how much temperatures will increase. And they may only be higher, as our fuel consumption/emmissions continues to increase. Predictions are that temperatures will rise ~8 degrees in Temperate Regions and ~5 degrees in the Tropics. Consider the effects of one degree and multiply it several times.

As for the idea that the Earth shifts in and out of ice ages, how long will it take to "research" this theory. The effects of global warming will be terrible, is caution not better when faced with such disaster? Is it not better to act now, especially when there is overwhelming evidence pointing to human influence as the major cause of global warming/climate change?

I understand that many of these people who make a fuss about climate change are hypocrites, but at least they admit it is a problem that must be tackled. If this type of person became leader, then did nothing about climate change because they were fear mongering, wouldn't there be a huge public outcry?

Once again, I am not denying that we need to be more conservative about human waste. Be it trash, emissions, etc.

Here. If this will make you feel better about the ice bridge.

OK, so one winter does not a climate make. It would be premature to claim an Ice Age is looming just because we have had one of our most brutal winters in decades.

With that being said...1 year vs 100 yrs. in relation to 4.5 BILLION years...is not really any different in proportion. You could make the same argument really over one day.

Sorry, I'm horrible at math, but i do understand proportions. 1/4500000000 and 100/4500000000 really aren't that different. When you look at it like that...how is it that we can be SO SURE that the data we have can be so conclusive. Also, how many meteors have struck the earth? how many volcanoes have erupted? How much carbon do you think has been put into the atmosphere from each of these? Over the span of 4.5 BILLION years, i could easily see it being almost as much as we have put into it in the last 100 years. Seriously man, I just refuse to be "SO DAMNED SURE" that we are making that much of an impact on such a little amount of data.

I'm not saying your wrong. I am just saying that we should have some more facts before I regress to the stone age living fearing that I will get a "green ticket" or something because i lit a fire to cook some food for my family.

BTW, This is not how regular Americans think. So don't tell your friends in England that all Americans are dumb rednecks. I'm almost positive that I'm the only one.

The main reason I vote is... for the right to vote. If not many people vote we would lose the right to vote. So no elections and we still would have a president. Most likley appointed or something (or who can benefit companies). If we keep voting in good numbers then we won't lose the right to vote

On the case of Global Warming (Yes, Chris, this is for you):

Okay, so the evidence isn't overwhelming for you...That's fine. But consider this...

There is SOME evidence that the current Global Warming is man-made/influenced/call it whatever you want. This causes a threat to us, because the Earth is not just the way we want it, and it's beginning to endanger us. Now, if we take steps to stop this and it works, that's great! If we take steps to stop it and it doesn't work...At least we tried.... If we take steps to stop this and it backfires completely, sending us into a cooling frenzy, and we're once again endangered, don't you think we should fight against that, too? I mean, as long as things aren't the way we want them to be, as a principle we should try to fix that.

Humans didn't survive by purely adapting. Humans survived by adapting everything else to our needs. To sit back and say, "this is supposed to happen" is like sitting back and saying "Well, I could save my house by putting up tons of sand bags, but I think I'll let the flood take it because that's what is supposed to happen." If we change now, we die sooner rather than later, don't you think? Let's keep adapting our environment to us, shall we?

IMPORTANT NOTE: The views expressed in this post are not neccessarily the exclusive and definite views of AWOL. These "points", if you will, are made as a counter-arguement to play the Devil's Advocate so that this post may continue(and satisfy an/any intellectual curiosity). It is expressed to Chris because it is challenging his expressed views, but all others are welcomed to join.

P.S.: There is definitely a counter-argument which can be expressed by the Devil's Advocate, but, again, the Devil's Advoacte wishes to volly with others. Hence, why it is presented as it is.

I think global warming is just a card slapped in our faces to shut people up. Carbon monoxide will always be there, I'm not saying give up on funding researches, but I'de rather see more funds put into education, healthcare and job oppertunities. Its the same as weapons R&D, just an illusion that whoever has the bigger gun will win a war, while nowadays its whoever has a better economy will survive.

China is building an economy while the states are unfortunately spending more and more on military, I guess time will tell who made the better choice.

If someone argues that the US was driven into these wars and spending more on military was not an option, we'll need a whole new thread to debate this.

If I twisted this topic too much ignore me its 6:30 am and I need to zzzzleeeep
