As you can see the 1st time out there (last november) I was pretty cautious on the track, yet was always in the top 5 people, wtf, and lapping tons of people. So its important to just work up little by little. Well I went once, found some flaws in my bike, decided to not push it out there that time, I was running decent tires (pilot power 2ct dual compound tires) which work ok at the track, but just knowing in my head that they could slip some, made me hold back, I also had some suspension issues, rebuilt my forks a few months after that time, and switch my bike to GP shift (reverse shift pattern).
Went back after all of that (a month back) and was the 2nd fastest guy in my class, was not as fast as Charles on the gsxr, but was MUCH more controlled. I really wish I had video's of it but I had camera issues. My friend Stephan went on his gsxr 750, he kept up with us, but he was pushing it too hard and wrecked, then wrecked the next weekend (is on my vids wrecking, bike laying in the middle of the track...). So my 2nd time at the track was alot better, they bumped me up to intermediate group, even though Charles was faster, its not about speed, its about control.
I really think if I go back to that same track later this year (october is when we are looking to go back there) I will be running right there with him, or faster (besides the front straightaway, but my brakes make up for his power).
But as for being hard... the first time was just having fun and having fun, 2nd time I had my bike setup right, focused on control and good lines (and it payed off). 3rd track day was a all new track to me, but yet I lead the entire field, and 2nd guy by more than a half track. So I cant wait to see what I do in intermediate group.
We are going to Road atlanta June 23rd, and it should be very interesting, the track is like Barber (long wide turns, lots of switchbacks), and one LONG back straightaway, its one of those where the bike does not matter, its how big your balls are. Been watching videos, its a long right, then a slow down, then a sharp right, then wide open all the way through 6th gear, then a right kink that goes down hill, and if you have the balls, you stay full throttle, if you dont, you can back off, make the turn, then throttle back in, then full HARD brakes, and a hairpin left. If I can stay in it the whole time, and he does too, he can put a large distance on me, but, if he lets out, and I dont, then I will make that distance back up while he is braking, and the rest of the track should be in my favor:
