Makeshift, in bios, under the voltage section, make sure to set your memory to 2.0v (1.8 is the default and your memory needs 2.0-2.1 to run right).

Since you have a gigabyte motherboard they have a awful voltage system that just say +0, +0.05, +0.1 etc... since default is 1.8, you need 2.0, set it to +0.2

So, set it to ether 2.0v or +0.2 whichever one is there.

If you want, I can give you all my settings (on my work computer), my board is very similar to yours, its the P35, vs the x38/48 you have. Plus my settings are for 3.6ghz (overclocked from 3.0, same chip you have).

The goal in a proper overclock is to have it run MORE stable than stock speeds. In otherwords, my computer now runs better than it would if you do not adjust your bios options. Leaving everything on default settings IS NOT the optimal settings fyi.

If you want to check your computer for stability, download prime 95, start it, and let it run for 24 hours, if it never errors out or locks, you are good to go.

Also, all my overclocking volts are within Intel's recommended voltages, so no warranty voiding necessary!!!

Ok, I got some instructions for you, if you do NOT want to overclock, these are the settings for your memory that you HAVE to put in:

Go to bios
Mb Intelilgent tweaker (mit)

Change the system memory multpiler to 3.0 (this should set your memory to 999... aka, you bought ddr 1000, no reason to run it only at 800).
Change system voltage control to Manual
Change DDR overvolt control to +0.2v

This will properly setup your memory.

Your Zalman fan is also not compatible with the default settings in bios, if you look at it, it is reving up and down, bright/dim/bright/etc. go to bios, pc health status, and change:
CPU smart fan - to VOLTAGE (it should be on auto, which puts it on PWM, which is WRONG). When you put it on voltage, it will work right, run slower at low temps, and rev up when needed.

For an overclock use this (and like I said before, this is all "low" voltage safe settings (the only volt you are changing is cpu which is fine all the way up to 1.4v)

Go to bios, mb inteligent tweaker (MIT)
Robust Graphics booster - AUTO
Cpu Clock ration -9x
Fine cpu clock ratio +0.0
CPU host clock control - enabled
CPU host Frequency - 400
PCI express freq - AUTO
CIA 2 - Disabled
Performance Enhance - Standard
System Memory multiplier - 2.5 (400x2.5= ddr1000)
System voltage control manual
DDR overvolt control +0.2v
Cpu voltage control - 1.34375

Do all of that, restart, go into bios PC health and tell me your cpu temp, with that zalman it should be very cool, like 30 degrees. My work computer has the crappy intel cooler and with those settings is only 33 in bios.

Run the prime program for 24 hours, if it makes it 24 hours, go back into bios, drop the cpu voltage control 1 notch (lower volts), repeat over and over until it FAILS, aka, either locks up, or says, cpu test failure, then bump it back up to the previous 24 hours passing setting, and you are done, you have now overclocked to 3.6ghz. Took me 1 day to do this on my work computer. Your chip is capable of 4.0ghz+, but it takes ALOT more tweaking to get there, 3.6 does not even push that chip at all.

note: my zalman fan isnt attached to the one labeled on the MOBO. the zalaman only had 3 holes while the MOBO connector has 4 pins. didnt seem compatible but the fan is running off of the 3 pin one. seems to be working good...

Put it on the 4 pin one (labeled CPU).... then do that I said and it will turn off the 4th pin :) Trust me, it is made for 3 and 4 pin plugs, notice the plastic tab only spans across 3 of the 4 pins.

If you do this, it will regulate your cpu temp correctly.
