freeipods.com was a legit site back in the day. I know someone who did actually get a free ipod. There is some work to be done, but if you're really broke, it is/was an actual alternative.
Carlos, thats how free shit works. It's like a hardcore version of advertising. The company is being paid by those sites more than their are spending on giving out ipods. In return, those sites have an instant 6 member increase - which is their goal (to gain more members). Typically those sites offer a trial period, but you better make sure your ass cancels it before the next month comes or you're billed.
I don't know what happened to them, however I do know they were sued pretty heavily over selling their customers private information (I don't think Credit Cards though). Tried to look them up again, came unsuccessful.
If that link you posted is legit, I don't know.
However this quote from their ToC just makes me doubtful:
